Where ribbons of steel once crisscrossed the nation, now there are ribbons of green. Since 1996, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has helped convert thousands of miles of unused railroad beds to multiuse activity trails for everyone to enjoy. Today rail-trails are found in every state. These flat or gentle-grade trails are the perfect place to walk, jog, bicycle, in-line skate, horseback ride, or cross-country ski. They offer year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation. This complete listing of every rail-trail available for public use in the United States is the official directory of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Each rail-trail listing includes a succinct descripton of the trail's endpoints, mileage, surface, location, wheelchair accessibility, bicycle trail and contact information, including Web sites.
